Artists Book – “Words of Expression”

Artist Statement: "There are many words that can express what is being presented in a photograph and many times words can evoke a specific idea, theme, feeling or emotion. With the addition of words to a photograph the photographer is able to better demonstrate what he or she is trying to express in their photography."

I am using Blurb to create my artists book. I will put my artist statement along with the title and my name on the first page of my artist book. The size of my book is going to be a large landscape size book and is going to measure 13 x 11. I have it set as a hardcover book with a dust jacket. The size of each picture will be 12 x 9.5 and only the Front and Back covers will be set as full bleed.

  2. This photo is nice, you might want to try working on different angles instead of straight on. Also, your artist statement could be developed a little more to let us know WHY you are interested in these types of photographs. I like your idea and can't wait to see what you come up with next!

  3. Nick,
I agree with Sarah. Can't wait to see what you do off campus. Maybe if there was more focus on signage around town.

  4. Hey!
I think your idea and photos are great so far! I would definitely try to maybe play around with the text in the signs a little bit. Maybe instead of the text we normally expect to see in a sign, it could be something we don't expect. I can't wait to see more! Keep up the good work!

  5. I think this attempt is much stronger than your first picture. It is less poster-ish and more a play on words and imagery. :) Keep it up!

  6. I like your newer image, I think it is a better direction than the first image. Although I do agree than a different angle would have made it more interesting.

  8. Hey Nick!

I love your idea with the whole signs evoking emotion. To emphasize on the colors and make them pop, try using the selective colors tool, brightness and contrast tool, and the curves tool. Play around with them to make them a bit more interesting. Maybe some different angles?

    Can't wait to see more!

  9. I love the success photo! I too, like funky angles. Maybe this one would be cool to photograph looking down and to the right, since we should have lofty ambitions upon graduation.

  10. Nick! This new image is way more successful, however it still feels like a campain to get students at UWF.

But formally, the text and font is much more successful, slick even!

You are getting there--take your classmates advice and try everything. We will help you solidify a visual direction. You have the hard part down, which is a solid idea.

    Excited--

  11. i agree with val. it does seem like a uwf campaign. the potential idea here needs work and can really be cool, but you are going to really have to look into what message you are trying to get across.

  12. It looks like you are having fun exploring different texts. Keep it up. It would be nice to see you venture out past the UWF campus though and capture a variety of signs... maybe try working with different angles. Have fun with your camera! :)
